Orbit Robotics Team Scores Big at District Competition

Our friends at Orbit Robotics have made us proud at their first district competition of the season.

Competing at Georgian College in Barrie on March 3rd and 4th, the team took the lead on Saturday morning and held it all through competition. They were undefeated until the last seeding match Sunday morning, but stayed on top as the number one seed.

Winning in the elimination rounds, the team also took the Innovation in Controls award. Lead programmer Ethan was named one of two Dean’s List semifinalists—an award for youth members named after Dean Kamen, the founder of FIRST and inventor of the Segway and insulin pumps.

We teamed up with Orbit Robotics by offering space in our building for the team to carry out their training, programming, and practice with the robots. We were happy to hear that using our facility gave Orbit a significant advantage over the other teams:

“I worked at field side all through the event, and it was very obvious that most teams needed more driver practice,” said Orbit team mentor George Chisholm. “We hit the ground running mostly because our drive team had had that practice, thanks to alternawork providing us with space for a practice field.”

At alternawork, we see the value of innovation every day, and we’re thrilled to support programs that foster interest in technology among youth.

The next competition is at York University on March 24th and 25th, and the District Championships will take place at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga from April 12th to 14th. Good luck, team Orbit!
